Project Discovery’s Service-Learning Philosophy
“Only a life lived in the service to others is worth living.” Project Discovery’s Service Learning course embodies this Albert Einstein quote providing, rewarding opportunities to spend time helping to make Los Angeles an even better place for its citizens and visitors. Project Discovery is committed to helping students participate in social and personal transformation. Our goal is to encourage them to realize the power they have to grow as individuals while contributing to an environment of cultural understanding and mutual respect.
Project Discovery prides itself on being a leader in the pre-college summer enrichment industry and is committed to giving our students access to rewarding community service opportunities. We’re convinced, and educators at every level will agree, that these experiences not only improve the well-being of people around the world, they also produce more well-rounded, socially aware students – the kinds of students colleges want to enroll!
Students will find inspiring ways to use their talents by working with children in local schools, raising money for worthwhile charities or volunteering at soup kitchens, organic farms and senior centers. Morning and afternoon options are available, earning up to 40 hours of community service! Upon completion, every participant receives a certificate highlighting the total number of hours volunteered and projects completed.
Students have the option to enroll in an Intensive Community Service Program, which allows them to participate in fulfilling service projects during both enrichment offerings, or they can choose service for just one course period.
Past Project Discovery Service Partners Include:
School and Community Recreation Program
Students developed and ran an Olympics at a local day camp for underprivileged children. Working with the staff, students created a variety of different educational and recreational stations to give the kids an exciting summer afternoon.
Senior Living Community
Students participated in a variety of recreational activities, including bingo, dominoes, card games and conversation with residents to help further the mission of helping seniors maintain their dignity and independence.
Lending their energy in the fight to end hunger, Project Discovery students took charge of organizing and distributing donated food, arranging household sized deliveries that could be better distributed to Los Angeles’ deserving families.
Make-A-Wish Foundation & Pediatric Leukemia Fund
Taking initiative and putting their own touch on their service experience, students conducted on-campus bake sales and car washes to raise awareness and funds to support these two important organizations dedicated to improving the lives of terminally ill children.
Support Our Troops
Putting politics aside, Project Discovery students rallied together and involved the local community to support soldiers serving overseas. They collected books, chocolates, phone cards, California memorabilia and other items and then shipped them along with support letters to soldiers from California serving in Afghanistan.
“Thanks for giving Brian and Daniel the opportunity to experience a real college campus at UCLA. Your program is one the most well rounded programs we have seen for high school students. They enjoyed the seminars and projects, loved the activities and met some amazing kids from all over the world. We recommend your program to all of our friends! You guys get an A+!”
